Everyone I talked to has seen it as a positive experience - you're in college only once, might as well make the best of it.
My advice would be to go someplace that is completely different - if you know a foreign language well, like Spanish, French, etc., go to one of those countries. ALso, try to get out of the cities, into the smaller towns - that's where you'll learn the most.
