I lived in the dorms all 4 years of college, and for the most part I loved it.
Freshman year was pretty miserable. Frosh are typically placed in crowded rooms - 3 people in a double, 4 people in a triple, etc. I had 2 roommates - one was an absolute b!tch, and the other wasn't much better. But, someone moved off my floor in the middle of spring semester, and I inherited her single
So, for the rest of the year, I had plenty of space and privacy, but most of the other frosh were jealous of me since it's unheard of for a freshman to have a single.
Soph, junior, and senior years were great. I had the most awesome suitemates my senior year!
My dorm had a suite setup where each suite had several rooms, a common room, kitchen and bathroom. This was great because I love to cook, and to say the food in the dining hall sucked would be an understatement. Although, I do wish my sorority had had a house, I would have liked to have spent one year living with my sisters.
