There's a book which I think is called
The History of Orgasm that is all about how vibrators came into use. (I can't find it on amazon.com but I got it out of the library). It's kind of academic, but it's funny at the same time. The woman that wrote it was doing research on something boring like textiles, and kept running across ads for things that sounded to her exactly like vibrators. So a few years later she went back and researched and sure enough, that's what they were!
