i don't have a definate answer to your question (sorry!) but I think it might have to do with "vowel" letters..
for example, i heard somewhere that the Phi in Alpha Phi is not pronounced "fye" but instead "fee" because it follows a word that begins with a vowel (please correct me if i am wrong!)
