Well, that happens to us all the time. Since we're the Animal House, people just think we're a bunch of drunk slackers. No.
Our "rival" so to speak throws it in our face that our house didn't get finished in time for rush. The other houses (both sorors and frats) either don't know much about us, say we throw awesome parties, or want no association with us. Even at an IFC meeting they talk trash.
My advice is to just do what you have to do, let others thik what you want, and just do your own thing. Maybe I'm coming from a different position because we don't exactly have a good relationship with the other greeks, but that's the only thing you can do.
