All I know of Memphis is the airport, which some of is new and there is good shopping there if you are ever stuck between planes. We stayed at the Peabody hotel, where they parade ducks in and out of the hotel lobby twice a day. I did not form great impressions of the downtown; Beale Street was fun and nice. With an abundance of watering holes(Silky O'Sullivans), restaurants and music coming from the street. So it was a fun weekender, but I don't know how it is to work and live there.
Good luck. Have any places narrowed down for your move? If I were going anywhere, I would be all about southern California, but I better keep dreaming. The only place I'll be moving to in the next 2 months is into the city of Chicago or back to St. Louis
