After I posted this, I went to Rotten Tomatoes.com to see what kind of reviews it's getting. I discovered that the book (of the same name) was written by the same guy that wrote American Psycho. In fact, the character of Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek) is Patrick Bateman's little brother (Patrick is the psycho of American Psycho).

This helped clear some things up. American Psycho was also set in the 80's and one of the big themes was that this guy was seeing how much he could get away with. Power & fame & money weren't enough. I don't recall the author's name, but he seemed to question the materialism that was so rampant in the 80's (and still hasn't really gone away). I can see that same kind of thing in this story.. these are rich kids pushing the limits because they have nothing better to do.

I would recommend it if you're looking for something different. Or shocking. Although I'm still not sure I would consider it a 'good' movie.
