My chapter does not ask for recs, but if an alum writes one we take a long look at the rushee, particularly if it seems unsolicited (the rushee didn't ask for one).
Also at the end of spring semester, we ask sorority girls for any reccomendations they have of incoming freshmen (since we have summer rush). We invite them to our big rush events and invite them to bring along any friends (either rushees or other girls).
Finally, two of my pledge brothers were told by faculty to check out our house. There was no formal letter from those faculty members, but they literally told those two guys that they should check out our chapter.
