Personally, I enjoy the news threads a lot more than some other Chit Chat topics. I'd much rather visit the Chit Chat forum and learn that the woman who beat her child in the Kohl's parking lot has been caught than read yet another thread on cheesy pickup lines.
The news articles help to get a lot of interesting debates going -- some of them definitely get people to start "chit chatting."
