Hey, if the "most popular" girls on campus are the ones you love the most (for reasons other than their popularity) and they love you too, then go ahead and put them first on your pref card! If people didn't pref popular sororities b/c they didn't think they had a chance of getting a bid, no one would join that sorority!
OK, suiciding. If you suicide, you risk not getting a bid at all. Now, I suicided, and luckily got a bid. But I would not recommend it unless the other sorority you pref you just ABSOLUTELY hate, and would rather be an independent than possibly get a bid from that sorority. That's how I felt, and it turned out well for me. If you don't suicide, I think it would be much more unlikely for you not to get a bid. At my school at least, almost every girl gets a bid. The ones who don't usually suicided.
Now, if you suicide and don't get a bid, there is no chance of a sorority you cut earlier in the week giving you a bid. By cutting them, you took yourself off their bid list. The only exception is if a sorority offers you a snap bid. This is kinda rare. Usually, sororities will meet quota and so won't need to extend snap bids. The only sorority at my school who offers snap bids is one that has had lots of trouble in the past few years and has really low numbers. And if they offer someone a snap bid, that person doesn't have to accept it.
I hope that cleared some stuff up for you. I am sure you will do fine, and find a sorority you love. Try not to be too nervous! Good luck!
