Our school is pretty much the same. However, we have deferred rush (meaning we rush second semester.) I know my first semester I was friends with a lot of sorority girls, and trust me they weren't silent! LOL
During rush we are not allowed to talk to ANY greek member (either sorority or fraternity). I think we only have silence during our three days of rush so it isn't bad.
I personally think that silence is a good thing. I've heard of dirty rush resulting, and not being silent is both unfair to the girl rushing and the other sorority houses. I know on GC the PNM are turning to us for advice and therefore I wanted to make sure that by posting where I belong wouldn't influence the other girls.
