It might be better to rush in first year, as some campuses look at your grades.
When you rush as a Freshman, you're starting with a relatively "clean slate".

I wouldn't go so far as to say "Rush is Fake", but the conversation is fairly light, get to know you stuff:
"What's Your Major?"
"What do you like to do?"
"Where did you go to high school?"
"What the reasons that interest you in Greek Life?"

While these may be fairly "surface" questions, remember everyone is meeting everyone else for the first time, and it isn't appropriate to trot out the heavy personal baggage/issues to someone that you've just met for the first time.
