I guess it's dependent on where you plan to go to school (do you have your choices narrowed down?). At the Southern schools I'm most familiar with (UF, FSU, Auburn, UA, and LSU--all schools I do not attend, but have visited and spent almost as much time there as students do), membership in those three aren't limited to old-money debutantes, but it definitely helps to be well-heeled and well-connected. Of course, things can be different from chapter to chapter. I guess the best advice I can give you is to ensure that you have
at least one recommendation for each sorority at the college you eventually decide to attend.
I'm from the South, and didn't go to school (and obviously didn't go through Rush) in the South, but sometimes I wish I had, just to have experienced the Southern Rush.
