If it *were* me, I wouldn't be annoyed if someone sent a brief, friendly email asking what the status was. But don't be upset if they may not be able to go into much detail, since the selection process is confidential.
This is just my opinion, so wait to see what our other GCers think! Good luck and keep up updated!
