There were only 3 social sororities on my campus, all locals.
I didn't rush them, but here's my perspective:
The one (Sorority A) that had the reputation of being popular, had the most girls wanting to join, etc. ended up being the one group I really didn't like (as a whole.. I had individual friends in the chapter). They turned out to be kind of snobby and cliquey.
The one (Sorority B) that had the reputation for being slutty was actually quite friendly (I lived on their hall my sophomore year) & very few of them were slutty at all.
My fave group (Sorority C) I didn't really have an opinion on my freshman year, I thought they were just "typical party sorority girs"... they ended up being the most down-to-earth and most fun to party with.
So your initial impressions can be very deceiving. Sorority A was totally different before Rush. And B & C I just hadn't given a chance before my sophomore year (when I joined my GLO and learned to respect
all of the other chapters, too).
