The conversations you are referring to are about recruitment at schools with National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities. There is a formal recruitment process used by NPC members to insure a fair and mutual selection process. At some schools it is still a formal affair in every sense although things are being changed to make things more casual and friendly.
If you look on the homepage for this forum you will see an announcements link at the top of the page. Please read the NPC Recruitment FAQ. That will help answer some of your questions.

The question I want to ask is what is the deal with the whole formal rushing and filling out applications and stuff about? I belong to a local sorority in a state school and have never even heard of formal rushing? Our Rushes are held at the organizations house, everyone is welcome and your not preassured make a commitment to one organization over another. You don't have to dress up either, I hear some girls suggesting wearing a black dress and a string of pearls to a RUSH!?!? what is that about! I guess I'm just in the dark because I belong to a smaller school, oh well can someone help me out?
