Yep. I actually find it to be so stupid that it’s hilarious how people can hold such blatantly bigoted views, and yet get so defensive when they’re called out on it. I think a lot of it points to their self-image. Like, most people want to see themselves as “good”, so when they’re labeled a bigot, that would feel like a personal attack to them, rather than a reflection of their behavior. Know what I mean?

And yes, the moment someone starts off with “I’m not racist, but…” you know they’re getting ready to drop something wildly offensive. It’s kind of like they’re handing you a warning label before the fireworks. And honestly? — it’s not subconscious. I mean, at least I don’t think it is. These people know exactly what they’re doing. That little disclaimer is their way of saying, “I want to say something racist, but I don’t want you to think I’m racist for saying it.” It’s honestly almost impressive, the mental gymnastics involved, lol.

As for ICE, that’s just a clear example of how systems can reflect and enforce prejudice under the cover of “law and order”. It’s amazing how much denial there is about the connection between policies like that and the deeper biases they come from. I just think the real shame is how many people are willing to look the other way because it doesn’t affect them directly.
