I've always held onto a theory that interest in Greek Life flows along with the Pop Culture and Music that is popular. Bear with me as I explain:
1950's - pop music/early rock & roll rules = Greek Life booms
1960's - hippy music/anti-establishment protest songs = Greek Life falters
early 1970's - hippy music continues = Greek life lulls
late 1970's - disco is king = Greek life rebounds
1980's - pop music "totally 80's" & MTV - Greek Life hits an all-time high
1990's - alternative/grunge rock rules = Greek Life tanks
2000's - pop music rules again (NSync, Britney, etc.) = Greek Life rebounds and surges
I know it's a rough theory, but if you take into account the pop culture of each era, you can see direct correlations with the "signs of the times" and the level of participation in Greek organizations.
Just a thought...not entirely scientific, but worth talking about...
