The impression I got was that, in past years, Sigma AEPi extended bids to everyone who came to their rush weeks and demonstrated sincere interest in joining. They then use the pledge period to get to know the pledges and determine who becomes a sister. With MTV on site, they were a little more selective, but still basically followed the same model.
And you're right about Jewish law regarding burial. The deceased is supposed to be buried within 24 hours, unless that means the burial would occur on the Sabbath or a Jewish holiday, in which case the burial is delayed until the Sabbath or holiday ends. However, families will sometimes bend the rules to allow out-of-town relatives to attend the funeral.
