If AOPi is getting a brand new house, then you may well be 100% correct! I didn't know they were getting a new house, and I haven't been back to the campus in 6 months... if they are building a new one, then good for them! Their old house was very nice (right next to Beta Theta Pi on 10th street), I wonder why they didn't move back into that one?
Here is the scoop on the acceptance rates during IU Rush--between 1,500 and 2,500 women go through Formal Fall Rush every year. It is semi-delayed... you start rushing in Sept./Nov. but you don't sign your pref cards/get your results until January...it is a long and drawn-out process, but it helps everyone involved make the right decisions, I think.
So, let's say that 1,500 women sign up for Formal Rush in August/September (that's a modest estimate). They all go to the first round of rush functions. But they don't have their grades yet. So, when the grades come in in November/December, about 30-40% of those 1,500 women will be cut for grades by Panhellenic. They won't even be allowed to come back to participate in Rush. Another 5-10% will drop out "just because." So that leaves about 900 women left who "really" go through Rush.
This is still a problem, though. If you get the number of Rushees down to 900, you still have to fit 900 women into 19 houses. Each houses' quota varies from year to year, of course, but quotas range right around 45 in a pledge class... you can do the math... 45 times 19 is only 855, so some girls get left out.... it happens every year.... in fact, it happened to me my first year through Rush, so I know how hard it is (especially since I didn't get cut by a single house my freshman year, and then got NOTHING on bid day--so bizzare!)
That's just the nature of things in Rush at IU. When I was a freshman, there were 23 houses... then my sophomore year, there were 21 houses... then by my senior year, there were only 19.... the stronger houses get stronger, and the weaker houses get weaker. (shrugging shoulders) What can be done about this? I wish I knew!!!
