This is how we do it in our chapter.
The previous pledge class gets assigned first as Big, before we move back thru each successive pledge class.
We try to assign bigs/littles based on personality and on major/interest.
Due to our feeling of 'conflict of interest', current pledge master & president don't get assigned bigs.
Assigning big/little also places the little in one of our chapter's families, and the little is expected to know their family tree. (we give them a copy of this).
Bigs are also expected to come up with the little's nickname (which they are given after being inducted) and obtaining their first letter shirt (again, given after their induction).
