I've seen it happen, too, although not as dramatically. Since I was a frosh 8 yrs ago, my campus:

Lost one fraternity (PKA)
Recolonized two fraternities (AEP and Phi Tau)
Lost one sorority (AXD)
One fraternity lost its house (Sigma Chi)
One fraternity got a house (Sig Ep)
One sorority got a much nicer house (AF in the old PKA house)

A couple of fraternities that were big have shrunk - Sammy is even being recolonized. One chapter that has perennially struggled is finally getting the numbers up. Of course, the "desirable" houses have almost completely changed. When I was a freshman, one chapter was a colony that reputedly took anyone, and now it is one of the biggest and best on campus.

The moral: No chapter can afford to be complacent!
