I grew up in Columbus, Ohio -- figuratively speaking in the "shadow" of Ohio State. People there naturally assume that OSU=Ohio State. It's often what you grow up with.
I see it run rampant in GC -- and it's perfectly understandable. I simply want to point out that it is a potential breakdown in communications, especially when it is written communication.

Generally, from a style book perspective, I should use "University of Southern California" on first reference, USC on subsequent references.
