Yeah, I actually gave up red meat a long time ago. My story is a little different though. My dad is a hardcore sport hunter. In fact he's going to Africa for the second time later this year. I think having dead animals in our garage and learning where meat comes from when I was VERY young had some adverse affects on me.
For instance, my mom tells this story of when I was four and she was serving meatloaf. She sat it down in front of me and I wrinkled up my little nose and asked "What animal is this?" She said it's cow, eat your dinner. I refused and ended up sitting there for most of the evening.
Later, at age 7 I announced "I'd be a vegetarian but I don't like vegetables!"
I haven't eaten a hamburger or hot dog since mid elementary school. I fully gave up all red meat sometime in junior high. I eat chicken occasionally and fish a little more often. It drives my family insane that I'm this picky. Also, I just spent the weekend at a family wedding and all the food served involved red meat such as hamburgers the first night, egg and ham quiche the last morning.... basically not planning for those of us that don't eat that stuff. I went hungry a lot. Fortunately, my boyfriend is very good about indulging my eccentricities and most of the time it's not a problem.
