Okay, here is my perception from this whole thing. Some of you all are crossing your arms leaning back and saying, "see there? Now look what they have done! We TOLD THEM SO!" Blaming MTV and blaming Sigma and blaming the pledges and blaming EVERYONE ELSE is really a poor cover-up for your own insecurities. Why not just eradicate the stereotype yourself instead of whining about it? Furthermore, why even worry about it at all? If the stereotype doesn't apply to you then what is the big deal??? If it does apply to you, then trying to shift the blame to MTV, Sigma, etc. is a waste of time when you could be trying to improve yourself/your org.
I know the major issue is that it will harm recruitment numbers. How many of you are actually disappointed that you could be losing potential members who think that MTV shows are REAL? I should hope that no one is scrambling to recruit this demographic.
Bottom line...worry less about what others think, and more about yourself. That way you can SHOW rather than TELL that your org defies the stereotypes.
