I was stuck at school for the May 8th flood. Actually, the rain got started on May 7th and I was STUCK! There are like 3 drains for all of Uptown and the water rose fast and furious. I had friends stuck on the BUS (and we all know that the bus is hellish in the sunshine and with clear streets!) I finally got home, but it's needless to say that I DID NOT sleep that night. Good thing we had a porch and it stopped raining late that night/early morning. The water was to our top step. I would have had a heart attack had water gotten in our house. The lower part of the 9th ward was known for being the first to fill up. I saw pictures of Betsy, Camille, etc. and I can only pray for them. My grandmother told me that if they hadn't climbed on the roof for rescue, they would have drowned.
I'm not even trying to get accustomed to that kind of nonsense. I still can't figure out why people continue to live in Grand Isle and all those other coastal cities. I'm sure they have to rebuild every year.
