Canada where were you...

A month or so ago I went on a semi-road trip to my friend's cabin in Grand Bend, Canada. We were passing through Indian territory, and on a lot of the shacks it said a bunch of comments. One in particular had me thinking about what it meant, since I don't know much about Canada's history, and don't remember any American history (if this was a part of it). It said "Canada, where were you in 1812?" Can someone please explain?
