I found that the people who gravitate to each other are usually from the same geographical area - I just got back from my second convention and although I met women from everywhere, the ones I am closest to are from NOVA, New York State & Philly.
It is very weird when you first experience it, but there's usually some type of ritual at national conventions. That helps to remind you that you do have a common bond.
