This happened to a friend of mine - our RA, of all things, promised her a bid. She was devastated when she didn't get one and it totally screwed things up for her future in the Greek system.
Prospectives - please, PLEASE, if someone does this to you, #1, don't believe it, and #2, turn them in. It is the dirtiest of dirty rush things to do. If you don't feel comfortable telling your Rho Chi, let the Greek advisor know.
