My big sister and her boyfriend, who is in a fraternity, have been dating for about 3 years now, and he has been adamant about the fact that he will never lavalier her. He is strongly against this because he earned his letters, he knows what they represent, and she doesn't. Period. She has no clue about his letters, and therefore doesn't get the privilege of wearing them. Of course she is a little miffed, but she's just waiting for the ring! Do a lot fraternity men out there share this sentiment? I think it's a very sweet tradition, but I can understand the problem some guys may have (and not just about the abuse that goes on afterwards!)
Sidenote (turning out to be longest post ever, sorry!): My twin was lavaliered a few months ago, and her bf had to become a "Pledge for the Week" after giving away his letter, and some of the things they made him do were hilarious. Wear a pledge jersey all week, do endless pushups upon command, and the funniest thing was he had to carry around a G.I. Joe sticking out of his pocket, and whenever someone asked what it was, he had to give a speech. It went something like this: "This is my action figure, without it, I am nothing, without me, it is nothing. I love my action figure, and he loves me." This guy is in the Marine Reserves, and he was so good natured about the whole thing, it was sweet!
