Yes, this was pre-RFM (nearly forty years ago). There were three spaces to fill-in with sorority names on my pref card. I filled-in all three; I ended up at one. We had been reminded that writing down the name of a group meant we WOULD accept a bid from them if offered; I loved each group I named!

Since I was a rushee and not yet a sorority member, I can't tell you positively why we were allowed to choose three or if/how many women received a non-preffed home.

Our campus was like others in its day, fluctuating in total number of groups and highly varied in membership numbers with total around 53 but less than half of the groups at or above total after Formal Rush. The year I rushed I believe only two groups made full quota; informal rush was absolutely common.

As a guess only, perhaps we were given surplus pref cards from a year in which there were additional sororities on campus which meant they DID attend three pref homes.
