Sometimes one can get rather lucky if one is in the right place and time. If shows are not filled, staff go out and pass out tickets in mid-town area. I know 1 or 2 people who go tickets to Letterman that way.
The Tonight Show seems to have posted Oct and it seems to be sold out already.
