It depends. Official class standing is usually based on how many units/credits you have completed. Like Titchou said, the university will tell the chapters your official class standing based on your transcript.

Some people consider number of years completed to be an indicator. So, if it's your second year, you would be in your "sophomore year". HOWEVER, tread carefully as it can look really bad to be in your sophomore year but still not have passed enough credits for sophomore class standing.

My advice here is to not fib or bend the truth. Let's say that you are a junior, which would normally put you with two years left. You decide to take a minor and stick around for an extra year. You do NOT tell sororities that you are a sophomore. In the example, you would be a junior with three years left.
