Many of our freshman new members this semester were already officers of their residential halls and some of the other larger service groups on campus. Students here come to join and most already know what things they want to be involved with. It has definitely changed from the students in the past.

When I attended SNC (mid-90s) many first-semester freshmen could join independent/non-greek social organizations but not join greeks until 2nd semester. First semester you could go through rush first semester and express interest, but not actually get a bid until going through rush the 2nd semester. Things have probably changed across the board with independent social groups and overall greek recruitment in the past 20 years (it was locals and Kappa Beta Gamma when I was there), but being allowed to do fall recruitment and have freshmen join their first semester IS a big deal (in reply to 33girl's post).
