It's a mom thing. She just wants to help and she wants her "baby" to have as nice a home as her own. I had to fight my parents tooth and nail to leave me alone when it came to decorating my apartment last year because there wasn't simply wasn't enough space for the stuff they wanted to put in there.

I think your mom has the right idea about trying to make your place more classy and mature...you're in your early 20s and eventually the beer paraphernalia and black lights will be relegated to your personal space like your den or pool room or something and not your living room. Once your mom's satisfied with helping, then you can arrange the place to fit you better. If there's something you don't like in the place like that column then you can add something later that'll take attention away from it. If your dog crashes on the couch then that'll be your business. Just remember that when you're trying to give your input on your own personal taste, be nice and grateful.
