A favorite story from one of my teacher friends: She had back to school night and my teacher friend (teaches 6th grade) commented to the mom that her daughter, Li-ah, was good student. The mom said her daughter's name wasn't Li-ah - it was Li(dash)ah. The dash wasn't silent.
Teacher friend called Li(dash)ah her name the following school day. The student asked her to call her Li-ah. She hated that her mom pronounced the dash.
