It's a shortlist of sketches. I'm not sure how it works at other auto companies tech centers, but where I work, once the design team has decided upon its favorite sketches, more sketches are then created from that particular shortlist of possible designs. Designers that haven't had their designs chosen are redeployed on the shortlisted designs and then those designers help generate more sketches showing different exterior and interior viewpoints or details of the vehicle currently being designed.
At this point there is often a further review by management. But this also depends on how many designs were being worked on in the first shortlist. It also depends on the manager. As a design manager, with my design team, depending on how much time I have, I usually decide to shortlist further or sometimes I might decide to generate CAD models using Alias.
