It gets really confusing for new students. It took me a little while to get the hang of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as Pi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Alpha. A couple of us still get Pi Lambda Phi and Lambda Chi Alpha mixed up sometimes.
When my ex asked me who I was having a social with one night I said, "Chi Phi" and he was like, "Well, duh, who else?" He thought I had I said, "Pi Phi."
And our new members at Pi Phi are called Betas, but the members of Beta Theta Pi are, too. So the new girls are just called new girls or new members most of the time.
Non-Greeks give up completely, in my experience. When my roomates were talking with me about a cute guy or some juicy story and they would mention the person was Greek, I'd ask which house and they'd be all, "Oh, I dunno. Lambda Chi Mu Omega, whatever. I don't know!" My best friend talked about a guy she really liked that she met on a long bus ride and couldn't recall which house he was in so I had to dig out of her every little detail that could identify him. If his house was on row or off row, etc. I was thisclose to busting out a chart of the Greek alphabet and schooling her!
