I had a somewhat similar problem when I wanted to pledge. My mom did not go to college so she was not too educated on the entire greek system in any way. So all she knew of was the stereotypes.
So, when i got a bid to a house I really liked I accepted it...and did not tell my parents. When I finally did they were kinda disapproving. They were convinced that all the sorority wanted was money and it was going to cost a lot of money...blah blah blah. So i said I would pay for it all on my own, and I did and still am.
Yet now, it is a year later and my mother absolutely loves the house. She feels safer knowing that I am living in a house with so many girls and that we take safety precautions ( we had some weird things happen on my dorm floor my freshman year and she sort of freaked)
She loves Mom's weekend and Dad's Weekend and all the stuff we do for homecoming and greek week. She also liked the fact that....my grades went UP when I pledged.
These are the things that parents love to hear about. My advice to you is to do whatever you can to convince them because you may regret it forever.
