Any resourse that you can find dealing with sociology/psychology and children. Going to a local childrens group home and talking to social workers is also helpful. My organizations website
Hillside Children's Center

If you want to work with less advantaged/forunated children this is the career or path to start for you. You definately get to see how the "system" works. You gain a better understanding of what Social Workers, Social Services and the government do for these children.
You also get to see what these kids are really like and how they really feel about their situation. We had to watch this video on how a child looks at his/her whole process of being adopted and it can bring you to tears. After seeing that I can somewhat understand why these kids sometimes act out the way they do.
It also makes you see what your downfalls and good qualities are, like...are you really patient, empathetic, etc.
--Minuses--
If your VERY sensitive this job isnt for you. You have to hear all the things that these kids have been through and what some are continuing to go through. In all honesty an episode of Jerry Springer couldn't even touch some of these kids lives.
The job can also be stressful. You have to deal with kids who do all sorts of acting out (PM if you want specific types, I just dont think Itd be tasteful to do it out). These are kids who do like to manipulate and some do take advantage of the people who are trying to help them. Some don't know any better. You have to be a teacher, leader, dictator and somewhat of a parent all in one.
