I think the season finale confused me more than anything.
At first I thought that Warlowe's "light" passed on to all the vamps and that is why everyone is flipping out about need a protector. But then I thought maybe it took it away. I'm not sure as I am a bit confused on why now everything has gone to hell.

Sam the mayor was a little weird and that Arlene now owned Merlotte's and changed the name.

The Hep-V virus mutated causing the new strain of infected vamps to go all feral and rabid (sorry, that was my best analogy). This is why the humans need protectors and why vamps need non-carriers of the virus.
