Do you think that part of the reason why they do it is so that it seems like a random crime, acted out by someone who they don't know? In other words, it wouldn't implicate any of their family members, and most likely, none (or very few) of their friends, so they claim it's a person of another race. Making it seem random means that investigators know going in that to find the perpetrator is going to be difficult - if not impossible - and it takes the focus off of the "victim's" life.

Just a thought.
