It really depends on the school, I think as to whether class year matters or not. Just for an example, at the school I attended (Capital University in Columbus, Ohio...small, private university) class ranking didn't really matter. Our chapter always took a variety of class rankings and we actually typically did better with those rushing as a sophomore as opposed to freshman, whereas another chapter did better with the freshman recruits as opposed to upperclassmen.

I wouldn't let being a sophomore deter you if you're really interested in going through this process. Good luck to you!
