People didn't wear their boyfriends/girlfriend's letters on my campus "just because". There were 2 instances where you would see non-members in letters:
#1 Chapter sweethearts and/or Lil' Bros/Sis. They were given a sweatshirt with letters on the front and then the back had the title (Sweetheart, Lil' Brother, etc.) sewn on.
#2 "Switch days"- each fraternity & sorority would have mixers called "switches" for their new members. The following day, the new members would wear the other GLOs shirts, jackets, etc.
Otherwise, "pinning" & "lavalering" just didn't happen on my campus. Well, except for ONE guy (a Phi Mu Alpha) who pinned his girlfriend. But that's it out of the whole system while I was there.
