I probably know just enough about this to be dangerous. I have been involved for a long time with Greek Life at ASU. The university wasn't always "un Greek" friendly. Since Michael Crow has come on board there has really been no support of the Greek system and/or housing. There are several different issues going on here. The biggest one is the noise factor that is coming from the fraternities who lost their on campus housing. This has forced them into residential neighborhoods. The social activities bother the surrounding neighbors and the Police are spending a ton of time trying to manage it. They did raze the 2 Greek Rows. One is empty and I believe will remain that way until a law suit is settled. The short story is that it was being developed for a Fraternity Village and would house Fraternities and Sororities and the University came in at the 11th hour and eminent domained the property for their use. There is way more to the story then that with a lot of blame being cast but that is it in a nut shell.
The fight that happened was started by non fraternity men. That could have happened whether or not the Fraternity was on campus or not.
The last thing going on is there are several proposals on the table to get all the Greeks together in one form or another. One has all groups being housed off campus in various style buildings. The other has only sororities together in one location. There is one Fraternity that has already purchased an old hotel for housing. We are in such a predicament here and while the sororities are housed in dorms recruitment is becoming a huge problem for us space wise. That is a whole other thread and topic.
Bottom line is Tempe Police are fed up and the surrounding neighborhoods are fed up and the Greeks have no where to go or live together.
