It's an "old" prison expression (one of my friends has been serving a life sentence since the mid 80s, no parole, and no I am not going to discuss it so don't ask, but that's who taught me this expression): "in the car" = aligned, in the posse, etc. There are variants: when you have a disagreement, you might get put in the back seat, or in the trunk.
