I currently have a 2012 Limited Edition Jeep Liberty, which is sort of similar to the Cheroke. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my car, but I average between 9-14 mpg at my school. The Cheroke gets better gas mileage, but not much. I would strongly suggest looking at a Honda Pilot. A few of my friends had them and not a single one of them had any complaints.
