Same reason it pays to always acknowledge the busy office staff in the department of your major (and bake them cookies occasionally). They really do know how to help with corrections and computer issues signing up for classes and such. Especially if they know and like you.

Could not agree more with this. I work in a college and while I know students often feel like they're just a number, for the most part, the people who work as advisors/counselors/support staff are really hard working and want to help students and they are just understaffed and can't do all they want to help. They are much more likely to help you out in a bind if you've been nice to them all along--same goes in the "adult" world too.
