With bulbs the depth they are planted at can matter too. For example most tulips should be planted about at about 6 or 8 inches down and iris rhizomes go just below the surface, 2 inches at most. Your nursery is your friend, they will know what grows well in your hardiness zone. If you have any boggy area in your yard look into Louisiana iris.
