A few years back I had to change flights in Chicago (o hare) and there were dogs at the gate, they took my water (which I purchased on the flight before!), checked my passport again and they even took my eyelash curler.
When I flew from Santa Ana (john wayne airport) to the Netherlands they didn't even check my passport, only my tickets. Bag wasn't scanned either.
